2018 Draft Analysis: Darnold to New York Jets

With the #3 overall pick, the New York Jets selected USC QB Sam Darnold. In 2017, Darnold led the PAC-12 in passing yards (4,143) en route to a conference championship.

Darnold might just be the QB to turn the New York Jets around. Playing in a pro-style offense in college, Darnold is poised to make an early impact in the NFL, whether in 2018 or 2019. For what he lacks in ball security, he makes up for with arm strength, quick release, pocket presence, and touch.

In terms of fantasy value, Darnold himself won’t be draftable as a QB1 in standard leagues. It’s unclear if the Jets will start him or veteran Josh McCown, and even if Darnold does start, he’s not in an ideal fantasy situation. Darnold as a starter wouldn’t even affect the value of WRs Robby Anderson and Jermaine Kearse, as both are better off with gun slinger Josh McCown at the helm. Additionally, it appears likely that Anderson will face a suspension due to an off-season felony. The one positive impact Darnold could have is if he is able to get the Jets offense rolling, RBs Bilal Powell, Isaiah Crowell, and Thomas Rawls could all benefit from a positive game script. Regardless, this backfield is likely too crowded to yield fantasy dividends in 2018.
