Injury Recap: Week 5
While no one wants it to happen, each week players are bound to go down with injuries. In each weekly Injury Recap article, we will go over the fantasy relevant players that got injured, how significant each injury is, and which players will benefit/suffer from this injury.
Matt Breida (RB, San Francisco 49ers)
Injury: Ankle, undisclosed
Matt Breida went down with a scary looking leg injury early in the second quarter of the 49ers game. Even though he didn’t return to the game, Breida indicated in a post game interview that it was a “little tweak”, indicating that the injury isn’t serious, but his status for next week’s matchup against the Packers on Monday Night is very much up in the air. What is more concerning though is Breida has now seen ankle, knee, and shoulder injuries so far this season which puts into question how much of a workload he can handle at only 190 lbs. In his absence, Alfred Morris would be the 49ers Week 6 starter at RB, although he is a touchdown crapshoot at best.
Kerryon Johnson (RB, Detroit Lions)
Injury: Ankle, undisclosed
Kerryon Johnson was having a solid day until he was forced to leave with an ankle injury. It was reported that he could have returned to the game if needed so the injury is likely nothing serious. Kerryon Johnson should be a good flex play for the remainder of the season, with his upside limited until Head Coach Matt Patricia decides to feature Johnson over LeGarrette Blount.
Corey Grant (RB, Jacksonville Jaguars)
Injury: Foot, Lisfranc injury
Corey Grant is out for the remainder of the season with a Lisfranc injury. While Grant was not a fantasy relevant player, he did see increased playtime with Fournette injured. Now that Grant is out, Yeldon should be featured in every aspect of the Jags’ Offense, seeing his value get a little boost until Fournette comes back.
Brandin Cooks (WR, Los Angeles Rams)
Injury: Head, Concussion
Brandin Cooks suffered a concussion after a scary hit in the Rams game vs the Seahawks. Concussions typically have a 1-2 week time period so his status next week is in doubt. In his absence, Robert Woods should see time as Jared Goff’s primary target.
Cooper Kupp (WR, Los Angeles Rams)
Injury: Head, Concussion
Another reason Robert Woods will be the one to see the most targets from Jared Goff next week is because Cooper Kupp also suffered a concussion. Kupp has been on fire so far this season, but there’s a chance he doesn’t see the field next week due to the head injury. If both Kupp and Woods are out, WR Josh Reynolds and TE Gerald Everett could be worthy dart throws if your team is struggling with injuries or byes.
Rashard Higgins (WR, Cleveland Browns)
Injury: Knee, MCL Sprain
Rashard Higgins was looking like a hot waiver wire pick up this week until he went down with a knee injury in the Browns game on Sunday. He had 3 catches for 66 yards and a touchdown before sustaining a MCL Sprain. Hue Jackson said Higgins will be “week to week” so he will likely miss next game. In Higgins absence, Antonio Callaway should see a boost in production as the team’s de facto WR2.
